This process is also commonly called “colored concrete” and can be used in both interior and exterior concrete surfaces. These acid staining techniques are now being utilized in everything from new construction projects to current exterior and interior remodels.

The Beginning Procedure

The process begins when the professional concrete resurfacing provider cleans the floors or concrete slabs. Pressure washing is the normal method for exterior surfaces while interior floors are scrubbed with a highly abrasive buffering pad after the adjacent walls have been thoroughly protected from potential damage by the soon-to-be-applied acid stain.

The Concrete Staining Process

These acid stains are typically a mixture of tint, hydrochloric acid and metallic salts that leave the newly finished surface with a very unique translucent, uneven appearance. This mottled effect comes as a result of the acids reacting with the line deposits within the concrete. Since every concrete mixture has a different combination of ingredients and ratios, no two stained concrete surfaces will look exactly alike. This is one of it’s advantages, every surface looks slightly distinctive.

The “Ugly” Stage

Until the applied mixture of acid and color are neutralized with an alkaline-based chemical agent, usually a mixture of water and ammonia, the newly acid stained surface goes through an “ugly stage” as the lime within the concrete reacts with the hydrochloric acid. The longer that the chemical remains on the concrete floor or exterior slab before it is neutralized will be a contributing factor in determining the final resulting appearance.

The Resulting Effect

When the hydrochloric acid reacts with the old concrete, the finished product will have transformed into something that looks similar to weather marble, stone or slate. Because this is a chemically reactive stain and not a paint-like substance, the effects are permanent. Staining old concrete does not provide the potential for flaking, cracking or peeling as paint would do. With the translucent properties, the existing cracks and imperfections only add to the weathered and worn appearance provided by the process.

Staining old concrete is more cost effective than laying stone or hardwoods. It is even less expensive than carpeting or tiling your old floors. This technique lasts for the life of the concrete, provides a distinctive style all its own, and helps conceal blemishes and imperfections over the long term.

Installing a concrete drive way is a necessity for home owners in a lot of circumstances. There are a lot of benefits that you’ll see from using concrete rather than the other options, such as stone or asphalt. You have much more control over the design and you’ll also notice that concrete will hold up much longer than the other options as well. If you own a home and are looking to install a new driveway, you should give this a read. By the end of this post you’ll see how beneficial it is having a concrete driveway rather than the alternatives.

One thing you’ll notice is that most roads and commercial parking lots are made from concrete, and for good reason. Concrete is hard to match in strength and it’s known for its long term ability to hold up to even the roughest of conditions. No matter what type of car you own, it’s safe to say that it weighs a lot and requires a surface that is able to withstand its weight. Concrete has the ability to hold up to even the heaviest of vehicles for many years. You don’t have to worry about any cracking or damage, because it has a very high load-bearing threshold.

On top of being one of the most durable materials, concrete is also very versatile when it comes to customizability. You don’t have to stick to the old boring gray color; you have the option to use a number of dyes that can match virtually any color you come up with. Along with the ability to customize colors, you can also choose from a number of different textures as well. Matching your current home’s exterior is a breeze and can make your home stand out.

Concrete is a pretty forgiving material and there’s hardly any maintenance involved. You can use concrete stains if you choose to, but that is entirely up to you. There’s no need to worry about weather damage or anything like that, concrete is built to last and seasonal changes have no effect on the rough material. Choosing a concrete driveway is typically seen as the absolute best option. You can drastically increase your property value and make your home much more visually appealing. If you’re looking to add a driveway to your home, concrete is going to be the ideal choice.

Concrete is used in almost every house as the primary construction material for walls and foundations. Due to its durability and strength, it can also be used for a wide variety of projects. Overall, concretes can be even used to create small mortars and large scale projects like dams and one example of this is the largest concrete project: Three Gorges Dam in Hubei Province, China.

This massive dam is made out of concrete. After its completion, around 27.2 million cubic meters of concrete were used and most of that were for the dam’s wall which was measured to be at 569 feet high. 463,000 tons of metal were also used to support the foundations of this gigantic dam. The dam measures at 7,661 feet long and with a top reaching at 607 feet above sea level.

It took the workers 3080 days to complete the Three Gorges Dam. The government on the other hand spent 126 billion Yuan to make this dam fully functional. At least 84.7 billion watts of electricity is produced in this dam alone. The huge amount of electricity is conducted by 26 high powered electricity generators.

The body of the dam was initially finished during 2006 but the ship lift of the dam was only finished during 2008 and in that same year, the 26th generator started its first operation. 6 more turbines were added to its 26 collection of turbines. Finally, in the year 2011, the dam’s additional 6 turbines begun to function. With the 32 turbines all in all, the dam generates 100 terrawatt hours of electricity.

Though the Three Gorges Dam looks stable, cracks had already formed as more and heavier rains poured around the area. Originally, the dam was said to handle even the most severe floods in 10,000 years. That prediction was made in 2003 but in 2007, it was estimated that it can only last up to a thousand years. And yet again, another estimation came up and it was now only at 100 years.

This huge dam is also known for its controversies. The cracks that formed recently had forced almost 300,000 residents to evacuate their homes. Other than that, 1.4 million people were also relocated to give way for the construction of the dam. Environmental issues such as landslides and earthquakes are also taken into consideration. Landslides caused by the rising water had contributed to the disturbance of the reservoir. One incident recorded that at least 20,000 cubic meters of land material fell into the Wuxia Gorge.

Even with these issues, China still benefited from the dam. Greenhouse gasses were greatly reduced due to the minimal use of coal which was previously used to create electricity. It successfully avoided 100 million tons of harmful greenhouse gasses from emitting into the atmosphere.

The Three Georges Dam is one of the engineering marvels of the modern history. Its massive size made it the largest concrete project in the world. The construction of this dam sparked controversies that people argue about. But the dam also served its purpose by generating electricity to its people and helping the country reduce its high levels of greenhouse gasses production.

Are you tired of your plain gray concrete front entry? Does its boring appearance make you sad and frustrated? If you are, then it is time to change the appearance of your concrete front entry. Keep in mind that your front entry is the first thing that guests will see upon arriving at your home. If you do not want them to think that you are not a good housekeeper, you should see to it that your front entry is well-presented. First-time visitors might even have a bad impression if you do not improve the appearance of your concrete front entry.

What are good ideas for renovating your boring and ugly concrete front entry? First of all, you should consider the type of house you have. The design, pattern, and color of your concrete front entry will depend a lot on the type of house you have. For instance, if you live in a coastal home that is airy, open, and has huge panoramic windows, you should have a concrete front entry that best complements a beach setting. Sandy beige and ocean blue are recommended colors. If you want to add a personal touch and use other materials such as seashells, it is fine.

If you live in a modern house with tall windows, asymmetrical patterns, and flat rooflines, you should have a polished concrete front entry that incorporates a geometric design. Houses like this usually have interiors with angular room shapes that need furnishings and materials especially made for unique floor plans. Green homes, on the other hand, make use of environmentally friendly materials. Hence, it is more appropriate to have a stained concrete front entry for this type of home. It should be able to absorb, release, and absorb heat.

If you live in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, southern California, or any other area with desert-like climate, you should use concrete for insulation against the extreme heat of the sun. Aside from using concrete on your roof, you should also use concrete on your front entry. Stencil and stamp patterns such as Ashlar slate, Spanish tile, European fan, and Arizona flagstone go well with a tile theme. See to it that you pick out complementary or matching colors for your home to be aesthetically appealing.

As for country homes and farmhouses that evoke simple charm, you should choose concrete flooring that is stamped with wood plank patterns. These are actually great alternatives to hardwood floorings. They are easier to clean and maintain, as well. You should choose concrete patterns that mimic natural materials like slate or random stone. Warm color palettes such as forest green, russet red and woodsy brown are also excellent choices. Your country home will be more attractive to guests if you have a natural-looking concrete front entry.

Of course, you should also consider your budget. You should make the most of your money, so do not forget to ask for quotes. Hire a reliable contractor and canvass hardware stores. Your boring and ugly concrete front entry will look amazing in a short period of time if you already have an idea on how to renovate it.

You are planning to enhance the flooring of your living area but you are torn with two choices: buying a really nice carpet or considering having it stained. You only have a limited budget so you are leaning to buying a carpet (that is way, way cheaper than concrete stain). But if you come to think of it, are you really going to save money with the option you are choosing?

Maybe you have to do some research first. You will be surprised to find out how concrete staining is far better than a carpet and why it is receiving a lot of raves from many people. Here are 3 things to know about stained concrete:

Stained Concrete is Durable

A concrete that is stained is proven to last for a very long time. Concrete stains provide a protective layer onto the surface of the concrete that helps it resist dust, grease, oil, and other harmful chemicals.

Also, concrete stains cannot be easily damaged by abrasives. You do not have to worry about the scratches that sharp materials (such as knives and scissors) can do to your floor.

A carpet may transform your living room for a cheaper price; but if you come to think of it, re-purchasing carpets after only a month or so would cost you more. Why not invest your hard-earned money on something that will last for years? Your floor needs a classy and sophisticated look that’s durable.

Stained Concrete is Beautiful

The beauty of stained concrete cannot be denied. Many people are easily attracted to the designs, patterns, shapes, and colors that can be done in staining concrete. This is also the main reason why many people, especially those who own business spaces, prefer stained concretes than any other types of floorings. Concrete stains create unique and sophisticated designs that cannot be achieved by other floor enhancement alternatives.

Stained concrete is also ideal to use in renovating garages, driveways, patios, interior floors, and walkways. In staining a concrete, you could use your artistic skills to get the kind of design and finish you want to achieve. You can transform dull and boring spaces to something classic and unique with just the right technique and application process.

Concrete stains could also be applied to walkways to match the architectural design of your home or office. You can also make the design of the stain to look like natural stones and have it engraved for a customized look.

Stained Concrete is Low Maintenance

The best thing about stained concrete is that it is easy to clean. Since its finish is very smooth, one can easily wipe off dirt by using a rag or a mop. It does not also require regular vacuuming. All you have to do to maintain the smoothness and shine of the floor is to apply a thin coat of wax and scrub it occasionally. This will save you money and time in maintaining your precious floor.

With all these advantages, are you now convinced to have your floor stained?

It is such a hassle for people who are going swimming to step on pool decks that have been exposed to sunlight for hours. The absorption of heat of the ground or pool deck makes it inconvenient for people to step on them. However, they cannot do anything about it. Not only do they need to pass through the pool deck before reaching the swimming pool area but this is also the place where people stay to hang out under the bright sun. Luckily, there have been recent measures in order to avoid this kind of scenario.

For homeowners who do not want to spend in refurbishing expenses, they can opt to spray their pool decks with water. The concrete will not heat up as much as when it is totally dry. Though this will raise the water utility expense of the homeowners, this method is still considered the quickest and the least expensive way to prevent the heating of the concrete pool decks.

Colors can not only help in enhancing the beauty of the pool deck but this can also affect in the heat absorption quality of the concrete. House owners should choose to use light and pastel colored materials because dark tinted objects can absorb more heat. They can use this color scheme to repaint their pool decks to utilize the coolness it can give to the facility.

Polymer based resurfacing systems is one of the recent trends that were developed to maintain cooler pool decks. These are spray-applied cement polymer products which are intended to prevent heat from being trapped in the material in order to retain its cool temperature. It is applied over the concrete base while undergoing the cooling process to significantly lessen the external surface temperature. It also contains orange-peel texture which makes air pockets available to keep the surface cooler.

These products do not only keep the concrete from heating up but it also adds durability to the product deck materials. It also coats the concrete with additional stain and moisture resistance that can avoid the appearance of mold and mildew. This coating help prevent cracks and fissures that can be produced as a result of the penetration of moisture and chemical compounds to the concrete. This also possesses skidding resistance properties that are good safety precautionary measures for pool users.

Even though adding these formulas will strengthen the concrete, this will not hinder in the convenient cleaning of the pool deck. These polymer products can also help prolong the good quality of the concrete pool decks of the homeowners. However, the downside for the use of this type of material is its complexity of replacement. It will be more difficult and more costly to replace the spray-formula after it has been coated in the concrete.

Enjoyment is the ultimate reason why house owners build swimming pool and pool decks in their properties. They can employ these aforementioned techniques to prevent the heating of the concrete pool decks in order to fully relax and unwind with their loved ones. House owners should never let the scorching heat get on the way of the ultimate summer vacation experience.

Garage floors undergo a lot of mistreatment. Tools and other implements are dropped upon them, water in various forms constantly puddle upon them, and cars leak chemicals onto them. This can result in floors that are discolored, pitted, scratched, and otherwise damaged. Especially if your are planning on converting your garage into a more usable living space resurfacing your garage floor can make it more visually appealing, and protect the structure from future damage. While it may seem like this is a huge undertaking, it is entirely possible to do it yourself if you are prepared with the right materials and a bit of forethought.

Preparing Your Garage Floor

The first step in resurfacing your garage floor is to prepare it. This will ensure that the resurfacing material will stick properly and will achieve the final look that you desire. Begin by using sandpaper and a handheld scraper to remove existing paint. When you have swept away the debris use a grinder to remove any remaining paint and other imperfections, as well as etch the floor. This etching will create a rough surface on your existing floor so that the resurfacing material will adhere properly. This can help you to not have to repair spots frequently.

Cleaning Your Garage Floor

After you have prepared the garage floor you will need to clean it thoroughly. A clean garage floor is the only way that your resurfacing material will adhere properly and maintain its integrity. Use a high quality degreaser to remove oil spots or grease. Scrub the floor thoroughly and then rinse. The next step is to actually clean the entire area. Generally a resurfacing kit will come with a concentrated cleaner created for this purpose. Mix the cleaner according to instructions and clean the entire floor thoroughly. Make sure that you scrub the floor carefully to ensure that all dirt, grease, oil, or remaining paint has been completely removed. Rinse carefully. Use a long-handled squeegee to remove any standing water then allow the surface to dry completely. This can take 24 hours or more, but it is crucial to wait until the floor is totally dry in order for the resurfacing material to work properly.

Apply the Resurfacing Material

Only mix the concrete resurfacing material when you are ready to apply it. Mix it carefully according to instructions to ensure that you are using the correct ratio of ingredients. Begin by applying a primer coat that will fill in any damage spots or cracks. Apply until these areas are filled and then cover the entire area with a uniform layer. Ensure that the entire floor is coated, and if needed, apply your second coat. For an added decorative touch you can utilize decorative chips to add color and a bit of shimmer to the floor. These chips are available in a wide range of colors and you can mix and match them to meet your decorative needs. These chips should be scattered while the resurfacing material is wet. Wait until the surface is totally dry before applying a sealer.

Once upon a time, you had very few choices when it came to making a concrete floor more appealing. You could overlay the concrete using carpet, have stone or another flooring material installed on top of it, or you could have it sealed against moisture. However, all of these solutions were either too time consuming, too expensive or simply not aesthetically pleasing. That has changed today. Epoxy flooring solutions for concrete surfaces allow you to transform any concrete surface into a beautiful, durable space.

Different Grades for Different Needs

One of the most interesting things about epoxy flooring solutions for concrete surfaces is the fact that there are different solutions for different needs. For example, for a residential garage floor, a 2-component, water-based epoxy coating can be used. This offers the lowest price, a wide range of design options and excellent durability. Light manufacturing or warehousing operations can make use of the same solution. For heavier manufacturing or warehousing systems, a serious of high-build epoxy resin coatings offers the best aesthetics and durability.

The Advantages Offered by Epoxy Flooring Solutions for Concrete Surfaces

One of the most interesting things about this type of flooring solution is the number of advantages it offers over bare concrete, carpeting or “sealing”. First, you’ll find that the epoxy coating is completely waterproof, ensuring that moisture does not penetrate into the concrete, which can cause discoloration, cracking and other problems over time. Spills can simply be wiped or mopped up when they happen.

Second, epoxy flooring solutions for concrete surfaces are resistant to chemicals. Whether you’re considering resurfacing your garage floor or the floor of a dealership showroom, this is a very important consideration. Cleaning chemicals, oil, gasoline (and any other chemicals) can have a very adverse effect on untreated concrete floors. Bleaching, fading, erosion and staining are common. However, with an epoxy coating, your concrete is safe from these threats, and will look great for years to come without you having to worry about what a chemical spill will do to the floor.

Designs to Fit Your Needs

Plain concrete is, well, plain. However, epoxy flooring solutions for concrete surfaces do not have that drawback. In fact, you can achieve almost any aesthetic you want. Whether you want the look of natural stone, hardwood or a high-gloss, professional color that helps highlight the design of the automobiles in your showroom, epoxy coatings can help.

DIY?

A quick glance at the industry will show you there are quite a few DIY epoxy flooring solutions for concrete surfaces. You might be tempted to go it alone here. However, that’s really not a good idea. It’s highly recommended that you work with a professional concrete and epoxy company to ensure that you are able to achieve the aesthetics that you want and don’t encounter any problems during the process. Epoxy coatings can be tricky to apply, particularly multi-part solutions or multiple layer applications. It really does pay to let the professionals take care of it.

If you are considering new flooring for your business, garage, basement or even the rest of your home, you have quite a few options available. You can invest in vinyl tile, carpeting, hardwood or even go with bare concrete if you prefer. However, epoxy floors offer some pretty significant advantages that you should be aware of before you make a decision regarding your needs. What advantages might you find? Here are some of the most impressive benefits you’ll find.

Decorative Options

When it comes to decorative flooring solutions, you really can’t beat epoxy floors. Epoxy can be colored in any shade you might want, or in any combination of colors. You can also add decorative elements to your floors, such as colored chips, quartz or glass if you prefer. Patterns, full color floors, marbling and many other effects are possible with this material.

Maintainable and Cleanable

Yet another advantage offered by epoxy floors is their ease of maintenance and cleaning. You have to do virtually no maintenance at all to keep the floors looking good. Unlike wood and other floors that require regular sealing and waxing, epoxy is naturally impermeable and requires no coating to make it so. That means that in reality, all you have to do to keep it looking great over the life of the floor is to ensure that you sweep and mop it. The occasional buffing will also help it maintain its beauty, particularly in high-traffic areas.

Texture Possibilities

Many homeowners and business owners choose to have smooth epoxy floors installed. However, you can achieve virtually any texture that you might want simply by adding aggregates to the mix. That makes this an ideal flooring solution for any area where slips and falls are serious concerns, and for areas where standing water is a common problem (around pools, in bathrooms, etc.). It’s also ideal for areas where skid resistance is important, such as in work areas or where machinery (forklifts and the like) need to maintain a firm purchase on the floor at all times.

Resistant to Many Threats

Unlike plain concrete, wood, vinyl and carpet, epoxy floors are resistant to a wide variety of threats, particularly to chemicals. Because the flooring is impervious, acids, solvents, cleansers, bleach and other chemicals will have no effect on it. Liquid spills can simply be wiped up. With other types of flooring, staining and/or discoloration is just one of the possible drawbacks.

Sterility and Germ Control

Finally, you’ll find that epoxy is an ideal material for situations where sterility is a concern. Because epoxy floors are seamless and impermeable, bacteria, germs and other microbial threats cannot penetrate and grow. This makes epoxy an excellent choice for hospitals, schools, medical centers, veterinary clinics and other areas where microbial control is an essential consideration.

As you can see, there are quite a few significant advantages you can gain with epoxy flooring, whether you want to install it in a home or business.
