Andy and David Guy’s Enduring Influence at SUNDEK of Nashville

How two brothers helped shape a company known for craftsmanship, integrity, and personal connection.

SUNDEK of Nashville’s success story is intertwined with the careers of Andy and David Guy—two brothers whose dedication, work ethic, and personal approach helped define the company’s reputation for quality and trust. From their early days learning the craft to leading one of SUNDEK’s most respected dealerships, Andy and David’s impact continues to be felt throughout the decorative concrete community.

How David and Andy Got Their Start with SUNDEK

David and Andy’s uncle, John Bonney, a pool builder by trade, first encountered SUNDEK at a pool and spa show in Orlando, Florida. Impressed by the product’s potential, John decided to relocate to Nashville and establish the coatings business that would eventually become SUNDEK of Nashville.

In 1986, Andy, who had been working as a sales representative for a flooring company, was ready for a change. After learning more about what his uncle was building, he moved to Nashville and joined the company as an installer. Not long after, David followed suit, and together the brothers began what would become lifelong careers in the decorative concrete industry.

Andy Guy

After several years as an installer with SUNDEK of Nashville, Andy transitioned into sales, drawing upon his prior experience in the flooring industry. His time in the field gave him a deep understanding of the product, the process, and the needs of both customers and crews.

One of the things Andy became best known for was his eye for color. He was meticulous about matching coatings to surrounding elements, whether it was the home’s exterior, the stonework, or the pool coping, ensuring that every project looked cohesive and natural. Andy treated every job as though it were in his own backyard, taking immense pride in each finished surface.

It was also clear that Andy had a true passion for the art of the sale. “He was the quintessential salesperson,” says Will Burley, General Manager/Managing Partner at SUNDEK of Nashville. “Andy thrived on connecting with people, and he wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty either.” His years as an installer made him uniquely skilled at understanding customer needs and ensuring that the finished product lived up to expectations. It wasn’t uncommon for Andy to step in and help crews on-site when needed.

When his uncle John decided to retire, Andy took the reins. Even as an owner, Andy maintained a full sales load, managed day-to-day operations, and continued to visit job sites.

When it came time to retire, Andy did so gradually—scaling back from selling $1,000,000 a year, to $500,000 a year to $100,000, and then easing out entirely. According to Will, “If his phone rang, he’d answer it, but he wasn’t out there chasing leads anymore.” Since 2022, Andy has been enjoying retirement with his wife, taking well-deserved time to relax after decades of hard work and dedication.

David Guy

Not long after Andy joined SUNDEK of Nashville, David became part of the team as well, bringing his own brand of reliability and relationship-building to the company. Those who worked with him remember that he came into the office every single morning, just like the crews, ready to support the day’s operations. David also made a point to meet with customers on Saturdays, preferring to talk with both partners together in their homes. He believed it was important to ensure everyone’s vision aligned before a project began.

David was well known in the Nashville community. “When we’d go out to dinner, he always knew everyone in the restaurant,” recalls Will. “He’d stop at multiple tables just to greet people.” A passionate history enthusiast, David often shared fascinating facts about the city and the state. “He was a history buff,” adds Will, who fondly remembers their long conversations about U.S. and Tennessee history.

Despite having led a remarkable life—growing up alongside Johnny Cash’s daughter and once walking into Cash’s living room to find him chatting with George Harrison and Waylon Jennings—David remained humble. He never boasted or sought to impress. Instead, he’d share stories naturally, weaving them into conversation, leaving others amazed at the life he’d lived.

David passed away in September of 2023. He is missed dearly by his fellow coworkers, his family, and the many friends who were fortunate to know him.

A Lasting Impact

Together, Andy and David helped shape SUNDEK of Nashville into what it is today: a company built on craftsmanship, integrity, and personal connection. Their leadership and commitment inspired those around them to take pride in their work, build genuine relationships with clients, and uphold the values that have long defined the SUNDEK brand.
