What Is a Broom Finish?

The broom finish technique creates a nice, subtle texture that looks like a broom has been methodically brushed across the surface of your concrete.

Broom Finish: The Pros

Here are a few reasons commercial property owners and homeowners like broom finished concrete:

  • It’s slip resistant, so you don’t have to worry about the surface getting too slick when it’s wet.
  • It creates a lovely texture that’s eye-catching, but not too showy, so it fits in with any style of home.
  • It’s a great way to get a nice decorative concrete surface at a reasonable price.
In this residential backyard, SUNDEK of Nashville used SunRestore with Broom Finish around this pool deck to create a chic spot for homeowners to hang out by the pool with friends and family.

Can Broom Finish Be Applied to Existing Concrete?

Yes! Broom finish isn’t only for brand-new surfaces. Anyone who wants a surface update can opt for broom finish, even if they already have an existing concrete surface. As long as the concrete is viable and doesn’t have irreparable damage, SUNDEK can apply SunRestore to the surface. After that, crews will apply the broom finish texture, leaving the client with a surface that appears brand-new.

Can Broom Finish Be Used on Damaged Concrete?

Yes. If the damage is minor and doesn’t compromise the integrity of your concrete surface, SUNDEK of Nashville can resurface it using SunRestore, then apply the broom finish technique. Before doing that, we would address all damage such as hairline cracks and any chips to make sure that all issues are resolved before applying the SunRestore coating to the surface.

Broom finish can be applied to both brand-new and old concrete slabs.

SUNDEK of Nashville used SunRestore with a Broom Finish on this residential driveway, creating an elegant border for the home’s entrance.

Where Can Broom Finish Be Applied?

With SUNDEK’s SunRestore system, SUNDEK of Nashville can use broom finish on just about any spot at a property:

  • Driveway
  • Patio
  • Porch
  • Retaining wall
  • Sidewalk
  • Stair
  • …and more.

Creating a Broom Finish

Here’s a brief outline of how SUNDEK of Nashville installs SunRestore with broom finish on existing surfaces:

  1. Thoroughly clean the surface. Just like we do for any other coating, we completely clean the existing surface so it’s ready to accept the new coating of SunRestore.
  2. Etch or grind the surface. We get the existing surface to a rough state where the new coating can adhere to it properly.
  3. Repair any issues. Before applying the new coating, we address any cracks, chipping, or other damage.
  4. Apply primer & SunRestore. Using a sprayer or roller, we evenly apply a primer to the surface. When the surface is ready, we apply SunRestore.
  5. Add texture. We carefully add the broom finish texture by strategically and methodically running a concrete broom across the surface.
  6. Add detail. When we’ve completed the broom finish step, we add joints by grinding or cutting. At this point, we’ll add any other desired effects.
  7. Protect the surface. Finally, when everything is ready, we apply a high-quality sealer to add a layer of protection. The sealer protects it from wear and tear and staining.

Can I Apply the Broom Finish Technique Myself?

While it is possible to apply the broom finish technique on your own, we highly recommend working with a contractor who has lots of experience such as SUNDEK of Nashville.

In addition to having done this type of work hundreds of times, we’re also very familiar with the type of problems that are often encountered during the process and can mitigate for those. As a local contractor, we know the area and can determine what time of day (and time of year) are best to apply new coatings, as drying times can be affected by weather.
