At her home in Bowling Green, Kentucky, a homeowner had an epoxy coating on her pool deck that she initially liked for its appearance—but soon realized wasn’t the best surface for a pool deck. It would get uncomfortably hot during summer and become slippery when wet. Concerned about these issues, she reached out to SUNDEK of Nashville for a solution. SUNDEK was offered their expertise to address her concerns.

Their idea: remove the epoxy coating and replace it with Classic Texture. This textured coating, which is sometimes referred to as knockdown texture, offers advantages that make it ideal for pool decks: its slip-resistant surface ensures safety even when wet, which is crucial for areas around a pool.

The non-porous acrylic finish prevents dirt, oils, and chemicals from penetrating the coating, making it easy to maintain. Additionally, the texture provides a comfortable walking surface, even with bare feet. It stays cooler than traditional concrete, brick, or tile.
To enhance the appearance of the coating, SUNDEK proposed including aggregate effects. This unique finish involves spraying multiple speckles of different colors onto the surface to emulate the look of washed aggregate concrete. The aggregate effects add character to the deck while also helping camouflage the surface from dust and debris.
The homeowner was excited about the proposed design and SUNDEK began their work on the project. The first step was to remove the existing epoxy coating completely, ensuring a clean, smooth surface for the new application. Once they properly prepared the surface, SUNDEK installed the Classic Texture coating, carefully applying the aggregate effects to achieve the desired look.

To meet the homeowner’s vision for a terrazzo-like appearance, SUNDEK created a custom color mix. For the Classic Texture base, they used Bone White. Next, they added speckles in Cumberland, Mission Tan, and Sable to create the aggregate effects. This approach resulted in a stunning, multi-dimensional finish.
Upon completion, the new pool deck not only looks beautiful but is also more functional and comfortable. The slip-resistant, cooler surface provided peace of mind, while the custom color mix and aggregate effects gave the deck a unique and stylish appearance. The pool deck was exactly what the homeowner was hoping for, leaving her satisfied with the final product.
