Concrete Refinishing Turns a Neglected Pool and Patio into a Backyard Retreat

How SUNDEK of Nashville resurfaced more than 2,000 square feet of concrete to create a beautiful, safe, and functional space for a homeowner’s family and friends to spend quality time.

Award: Outstanding Special Effects Job–Gold for Aggregate Effects

For a backyard retreat in Nashville, SUNDEK of Nashville resurfaced a pool deck using Classic Texture and Aggregate Effects, reviving the space to make it more welcoming and enjoyable to spend time in.

When his neighbor’s home came up for sale, a homeowner in Nashville purchased it, planning to use it as a guest home for visiting family and friends. One major perk of the new home was its backyard which had a pool and spacious patio area, perfect for guests to relax and hang out. However, the concrete in these outdoor spaces needed some serious work. After years of neglect, concrete surfaces were cracked and faded. Knowing he wanted to renovate the concrete surfaces, the homeowner reached out to Ross Hilz, Sales Manager at SUNDEK of Nashville.

The original patio and pool deck had an existing textured coating on it. “We knew we’d need to get rid of that coating,” says Ross. “It was in a state of disrepair.” Ross proposed removing all existing coatings and then resurfacing all areas with new coatings, giving all outdoor surfaces a brand-new look.

For the pool area, after Ross filled him in on options, the homeowner decided on Classic Texture, a popular coating that’s also known as “knockdown texture.” It’s incredibly popular for pool areas because the textured finish creates an anti-slip surface, bringing homeowners peace of mind when it comes to safety around the pool.

A closeup of the pool deck shows SUNDEK of Nashville’s craftsmanship on the project. For the banding around the pool, they used Peking Blue. For the Aggregate Effects on the rest of the deck, they used a combination: Franciscan Tan for the base and Bone White and Peking Blue for the speckles.

In addition to its anti-slip quality, Classic Texture is also beloved for its ability to stay temperate, even on scorching summer days. Unlike regular concrete without texture, Classic Texture doesn’t retain as much heat, making it more comfortable for bare feet. The color of concrete also has an impact on how much heat it retains, so neutral colors are best in areas where the pool deck is exposed to full sun.

When it came to choosing colors, the homeowner wanted Peking Blue for the band around the perimeter of the pool. The rest of the deck was designed using Aggregate Effects—a technique in which SUNDEK sprays multiple speckles of finish coats in various colors to create the look of washed aggregate concrete. Here, the homeowner chose Franciscan Tan for the base and Bone White and Peking Blue for the speckles. The combination of colors used with the Aggregate Effects method not only creates a stylish look, it’s also effective in camouflaging dirt, dust, and other debris in between cleanings.

SUNDEK also resurfaced the homeowner’s cracking steps and patio area using SunStamp and Custom Scorelines.

For the stairs and outdoor patio area, the homeowner wanted to do something different than Classic Texture to define the spaces. Ultimately, he chose SUNDEK’s stamped overlay, SunStamp, selecting a stone-like texture and chose Kahlua, a neutral light tan, for their color. Like Classic Texture, SunStamp is a cementitious coating that creates a durable, beautiful surface.

Because the patio area had quite a bit of cracking, Ross also suggested the Custom Scoreline Effect for both practical and aesthetic reasons. SUNDEK’s Custom Scoreline Effect is a great way to disguise existing cracks and minimize the possibility of future cracking. With this technique, SUNDEK crews can incorporate existing cracks into the design of the surface, creating patterns that mimic the look of joints between natural stones. The homeowner liked the idea, and SUNDEK moved forward with the plan.

The completed project was a successful transformation of the once worn and dated space into a beautiful, functional outdoor space. In total, between the pool deck, stairs, and patio area, SUNDEK of Nashville resurfaced about 2,300 square feet of concrete, giving the whole space a fresh new look. The homeowner was thrilled with the results, and he was especially pleased with the fact that it not only looks great, but it’s also safe and functional. With the renovation complete, the homeowner is now ready to welcome family and friends to a stunning backyard retreat.
