At the Customer Services Building for Metro Water Services of Nashville and Davidson County, the kitchen/utility room was in a bad state. An ice machine and washing machine both had leaking drain lines that, over time, had taken a toll on the existing flooring. The flooring—vinyl composite tile (VCT)—was peeling up and many of the tiles were even popping off.
Such a busy and crucial department that serves more than 250,000 customers doesn’t have much time to spare, so they needed a straightforward and long-lasting solution quickly. They contacted SUNDEK of Nashville to look at the damage and propose a viable solution.
When SUNDEK of Nashville came out to look at the floor, they offered several solutions including stained concrete, polished concrete, an epoxy floor, and a polyaspartic floor. SUNDEK presented the pros and cons of each, explained the benefits of each solution—all while carefully considering how the space would be used and what type of aesthetic the customer wanted. Ultimately, the client agreed that SUNDEK’s SunOne flooring system with SunChip effects would be the best solution for their room.
Get a free quoteSunOne is a polyaspartic concrete coating that includes a fast-cure primer, body coat, and top coat. Customers appreciate that it’s resistant to impact and abrasion, which is ideal for this multi-use space that experiences quite a bit of foot traffic. On top of being really easy to clean, it’s also stain resistant. In addition to these benefits, a major perk is that it cures rapidly and can be installed in just a day or so, which was really appealing to Metro Water Services. Clients also love that it’s low VOC and low odor, so it doesn’t leave a lingering smell after the coating is installed.
To color the surface, the client decided on SunChip in Dolphin. SunChip is a system that uses multi-colored vinyl acrylic paint chips that can be embedded into SunOne and other SUNDEK products. SunChip is not just attractive—since it’s multicolored, it also hides debris that might get tracked in during the day.
Once the client and SUNDEK determined the product and coloring system, Omar and Gustavo from SUNDEK of Nashville set out to complete the project. In just one day, they removed the existing VCT tile, ensuring that all adhesive was also eliminated from the surface. Even though SunOne is resistant to damage from water, they also made it a priority to position the drain in such a way that would prevent water from pooling on the surface and causing damage in years to come.
On day two, Omar and Gustavo applied the primer coat, broadcast the SUNDEK SunChip in Dolphin, scraped the floor to prep it for the coating, and then applied the SunOne topcoat. When they were finished, they cleaned up all debris.
Upon completion, the client was extraordinarily happy with the result. In addition to liking the new look, they also appreciate that it’s easy to clean. SUNDEK of Nashville’s quality installation completed in an efficient manner (just two days!) allowed the client to return to business as usual, but with an upgraded kitchen/utility room.
